sampling

approaching and landing
in my last post in my answer to Jude's comment I mentioned that I would attempt to make a sampler, with the 'Early 20th century embroidery techniques' book by Gail Marsh as my guide. I learnt about the fishbone stitch, Roumanian stitch, fly stitch, chain stitch, detached chain stitch, open chain, feather stitch and one-sided feather stitch, snail trail, outline, rope, Vandyke and stem stitch; reaquainted self with the (split) back stitch, cross stitch, buttonhole stitch and herringbone; it was Fun, lots of fun and this practice has indeed brought me joy. What's more: there are many more different stitches in this one book to discover!
The small woven bird piece, where the bird print had become half lost in the weave.....was invigorated with a split back stitch outline of the bird with another small bird added on top, much better....I will be experimenting more with the different stitches I'm sure; there is a sense of freedom with more actual awareness of the sewing possibilities

I love your cloth of many stitches! it seems we often think alike. The cloth I'm working on will have stitches added to it now that the weaving section is complete. This is the one I posted on the forum. Seeing all of these interesting stitches makes me consider experimenting as well. So far, I'd been planning to use only running stitch. Mmmm...
all this...your sampling....

and the bird sitting on the bird...
it must be in the Air...Patricia
with a bird on a head...and i
was remembering a fiber figure,
a seated figure with a little paper clay bird on her head...
Why do we need birds on us?
Must be a
reason

Nancy, I have seen your piece and like what I saw; I am curious to see what kind of stitch-experiments you might add and look forward to seeing the result!

Grace, birds on heads, birds on birds, birds on my mind, perhaps we project a sense of freedom onto them and would like a bit of that ourselves......

thank you Heather; you do know that it was your rave review that pointed me towards this book! It has brought me much pleasure as well as practical tips on how-to; I'm sure it will continue to do so
