blue moon

it's not a great photograph ( my phone/camera has it's limitations) I just wanted to record for myself this blue moon on a beautiful, quiet evening,; I''d forgotten all about the full moon and it was because Tungsten was begging for a walk that we wandered out and   there she was, shining for all to see; the dog always knows what's best for me!

we had a lot of rain last night

dyes, stitches plus seedling

quite a good dye result from the elderberrymush/liquid/copper/cap-mix

I don't think I've had this many colours in one dye

elderberry dregs
new bundle wrapped around cucumber/onion peels, dipped into elderberry liquid plus copper pipe

I suddenly saw how I could use different size stitches to create a different tension/feel; will be using this deliberately in a whole new piece

seedling from a fruit I ate in Portugal (the lady in the shop said it is called nespre), I'm delighted as at first nothing seemed to happen and then a tiny leaf came through and a bird destroyed this first sprout  and I gave up hope but did not remove the pot: and now a new one has emerged!

lots of stitches and a fresh dye

 the narrow cloth is gathering momentum, there are a lot more coloured threads than I had intended, but this is the way it's going, I guess I'm not the one in control here. it has a lovely warm blankety wrap-around-feel to it already

elderberry-copper-pipe dye result, no mordant, the colours are blue-er and greener than in this pic, but I liked the dog peeping through
and I wrapped yet another bit of cotton around the copper pipes, plus the elderberry mush plus three rusty bottle tops and it's all sat in the tin can with the elderberry-wine, ha ha, it actually smells rather nice;
so it's all soaking and wicking and steeping and becoming something!

nature calling

and after a long wet day, the sun finally came out and as Tungsten and I went out for a walk it started to rain, faintly; and I said to myself: this is the perfect weather for a rainbow and I turned around and there it was: a huge rainbow.......ow and I had forgotten my phone/camera so I raced back home and got it and here's a pic with just a hint of the rainbow

and the cloud trumpeted gloriously
and the dog and I looked on in wonder

golden moth, surprise present and more dye-results

 a surprise package in the mail from my friend N. in Eire; a very long time ago we visited Ireland for the first time and danced on Yeats' grave, respectfully.

 He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven by W.B. Yeats

'Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.'

butterflies and rotting fruit

today these butterflies appeared in our garden, there are dozens of them
small composition, found the white butterfly feather this morning in the grass

sorrel leaf

and yet another dip into the elderberry-dye, on the left sheer cotton wrapped around copper pipes and on the right thicker cotton wrapped around the elderberry-mush in an aluminium sieve, where I'm hoping the holes will alse make patterns, and as this brew has been going for a couple of hot days: it smells, the delicious alcohol aroma in the air is intoxicating!
elderberry plus copper dye! blues and greens, I really think the copper has had a great influence here.

we are stardust

she sits in her secret garden,

gazing up at the moon and stars

staring loneliness in the face; she hears a sound, it's her youngest son calling out to her: mum, do you know where my trainers are? followed by her eldest: mother, did you know we're out of milk....!

the dog barks: you do realise you promised me a walk!? she shrugs and wanders out into the world

Monday, 20 August 2012

seeing as I have a weeks' holiday I managed to go into town this morning, monday = market day in Gorinchem, it's nice to be able to do something different on a monday morning;  here's a picture of the canal along which you can see many houseboats, a common sight in the Netherlands

another bundle of joy, very fine cotton fabric wrapped around copper pipes and dipped into yesterday's  elderberry-dye
 when they were still tiny babies
I used to call the boys  ' my bundle of joy' (bundeltje geluk), after they'd had a bath and were dressed in a body suit (rompertje)  I'ld wrap a cotton nappy arond their middle so they could wriggle their legs, in winter they'ld wear tiny vests, with the opening at the back and tiny socks.....

her secret garden

fruits from the garden

2012 is a bad fruit year: late frost meant lots of blossom were frozen and as a result harvest is meagre.

the elderberry dye gave a bright pink, in the photo left top half, however washing in water and soap turned the colour blue-grey; a nice colour, but the vivid pink was rather spectacular; I've rinsed the top half with water and wonder if the colour will remain;  I redipped the fabric on the right into the dye, rinsed in water, the colours mixed, again will have to wait and see how the dye develops once dry; perhaps if I use them in pieces that won't be washed it'll be okay.

hurray for summeheat and dyeing again

 another dye experiment with elderberries and tartaric acid, I'm hoping for shades of purple/pink; a second dye book, a present from my sister-in-law who bought this many years ago:
