it's getting colder and still the dye pot has some colour to offer, I leave it outdoors as the odor, pleasing as I may find it, is mildly offensive to the other household members; on a whim I cut up several different fabrics into squares and clamped them with coins of varying size and origin, the results are not dramatic, however I hope effective once I get stitching, although some results were disappointing: too little contrast; I've thrown another batch in for an over dye hoping for more contrast! my mood quickly improved as the Gang had decided to throw a little pre-halloween party with the new spider lights I bought for them the other day in town, they let me stay and watch: some enjoy 'Drumsticks' gorilla's racket and stay in the living room, nipping their Brasilian cocktails served in special beakers, whilst others have fled upstairs where they have the spiders, gaiety and pleasant conversation minus the noise

add on: later dye results, much more sun/moon going on here albeit in a crepuscular manner, the brightly coloured backgrounds are particularly uplifting, I'm going to experiment a bit with these new colour schemes; image is poor quality due to artificial lighting:

I don't know if you noticed but in the images above there are two cut-outs from early paintings of lonely folks in rowboats, for the life of me I can't remember where this image originated, maybe the song 'row, row, row your boat gently down the stream,.....' a song my mum used to sing, teasing us ever so slightly 'cos we thought it was a sad song, despite the word 'merrily' it didn't feel right if life was 'but a dream.....'and in one of the latest pieces I've been working on a small sailing boat has materialized; as I am very much a land kind of person and hardly do any sailing or rowing it puzzles me why I feel the urge to include it in the imagery; as a nation we are surrounded by lots of water and I feel intense pleasure at the relative proximity of the sea and the rivers indeed very close by, but still I am intrigued, probably best not to have an answer

very latest project: combining two strips of dyed cloth, evoking planetary movements or x-rays, have started sewing them together with very small stitches, love doing that
bought 3 square glass/metal frames and 1 oblong one (was all they had left), they can open on top, perfect for small two-sided pieces; sometimes I stumble upon something like this and have to buy it, you know next time you go to the store it'll be out of stock

reworking an old piece, adding Sun Moon & Stars - as a follower of Jude's latest 'class' -  with lots of thread beads, for one because I love the feel of them and to me they could also represent stars, light specks, shimmering motes of stardust; the cloth was wider, too wide I felt so I cut it on both sides and added neat edges with the very thin red/white cloth, hence the blue bird lost it's tail; I also added the blue-grey sky fabric with the dyed moon and the red-white middle square with the cut-off tree-thingy on top and as I was so busy cutting away sewn on bits and restitching others, I decided to cut the middle layer away from underneath all the coloured bits as well, making it all two-layered three-layered, another thing I learned from Jude; in this way the backing is left cloth intact for a neater look, I always like to look at the back of a piece as well; if I've lost you by now: don't worry it's not that interesting, this information is mainly for personal record-keeping.
probably more interesting than the back of this piece is the article on woodlice lying underneath it, did you know they grind dead wood into powder so the fungi can get to work; thanks to the woodlouse's endeavours valuable nutrients from dead organic matter is rendered back into the soil so living plants can prosper; without woodlice woods would disappear or become much less diverse!  Onsiscidea is the name for this group of arthropods, not insects  but crustaceans, related to crabs, lobsters and shrimps. They date back 160 million years. They're constantly shedding their skin and devouring it as well, theirs is a peaceful life: eat, sleep, shed repeat.
Imagine my surprise when I discovered just how many synonyms there are in the English language for such a small creature:

pill bug
armadillo bug
potato bug
roll up bug
sow bug

addendum for Grace in response to her comment: I said the piece was two-layered, I don't know why, I guess I didn't look properly, as it obviously has at least three layers, where there is the red/white square with the tree-thingy scrap of cotton it has 4 layers, as the red/white is so very thin I feel it to be okay that way; why I'm being so finicky about this is in part thanks to Jude's teaching (she frequently explains how she cuts away layers after having added bits of fabric, so overall there is the same amount f.e. here) and also the entire feel of the piece is directly influenced by the layering and as it's hanging (or will be soon) the amount of cloth and weight involved matter, which you 'get' once you feel the real item in your hand

'Instant Karma's gonna get you
Gonna knock you right on the head

What in the world you thinking of
Laughing in the face of love
What on earth you tryin' to do
It's up to you, yeah you

Instant Karma's gonna get you
Gonna look you right in the face
Better get yourself together darlin'
Join the human race
How in the world you gonna see
Laughin' at fools like me
Who in the hell d'you think you are
A super star
Well, right you areWell we all shine on

Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Well we all shine on
Ev'ryone come on

Instant Karma's gonna get you
Gonna knock you off your feet
Better recognize your brothers
Ev'ryone you meet
Why in the world are we here
Surely not to live in pain and fear
Why on earth are you there
When you're ev'rywhere
Come and get your share

Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Yeah we all shine on
Come on and on and on on on
Yeah yeah, alright, uh huh, ah

Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Yeah we all shine on
On and on and on on and on'

last weekend: apple picking in the front yard; imagine finding a blossom this late in the year...climate change...we seek to caught between the twigs on it's way down...She could be Eve too...she is me...she is are me...we want to connect

mild morning day may i lay here or in a simlar spot and be eaten by the worms and maggots, be wrapped by mycelium, spread out over vast areas...we try to connect

discovered an old unfinished piece that could so with some Moon, Stars & Sun as shared by Jude ...we feel connected

so it was clamped and dipped into the walnut dye, which already held a linen, a silk and a cotton strip for a different project, more on that in a later post...we are connected

as I was nervous about losing the beautiful lower lines, I removed the cloth far sooner than I would normally have done, subtle and now I have to consider what to do next, if anything...moon stars sun...

meanwhile lots of excitement in The Dwelling as MadMonkey arrived with a TeleVision! There was No Where to install the huge box and so drastic measures were required, resulting in an extension to the living area cum library; look how neat and tidy it is now; several kind souls are moving furniture and have laid the make-shift table (a wooden floor block) As they have never experienced a TeleVision before and are not sure what a box could offer in the way of Fun and amusement and so several hosehold members have offered to contribute to the evening's entertainment with some live performances; hence Duck has promised to give a lively castagnet session, two of the Small Critters (clay frog and giraffe) are going to perform a dangerous balancing act on the trailer; Pelican has promised to sing, although not everyone's convinced this counts as Fun...

Mr.Hornyblowguy has in his capacity as Official HornBlower to OBK (no pun intended) offered to summon everyone by blowing his instrument, ensuring all who wish to attend, can be there in time for the Performance...

Chef, wearing a frown, despite the scrumptious & delicious looking chocolate cake he has baked, Rat at least is smiling, probably because he has been licking the spoon and bowl once the cake went into the oven; in yet another kitchen Luke and Marge have managed a cream and red fruit delight, I don't think we have to worry about anyone going hungry this evening......

a couple of our well-known friends are hanging out in OBK's bedroom, bless him, as are many of the birds, we are connected

we are connected

'Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Yeah we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun'
