the company we keep

The walk by myself this morning led me to thoughts about how one has conversations in one’s head, conversations one has with others and how sometimes you can feel totally at ease with this other person, and it doesn’t matter if you know each other well or not, there is a rhythm to the conversation and it just flows. I had this image this morning walking in the woods and perhaps seeing all these trees influenced me, it was an image of a conversation as a tree.

tree bark bracelet

Let me explain: I am talking and the other person is talking and we are talking about Everything that comes to mind. We start in the roots of the tree and then we leap up onto a branch, then slowly work our way to a twig, from there step onto a leaf, are then blown away by the wind (still on the leaf) the wind turns and we land on the bark and work our way into the rings towards the core, get tugged along by the sap stream moving upwards towards the light; just an image mind you, of how the conversation can move in all directions and yet we still understand one another at an essential level. Meaningful. I love conversations like these.

Was in a bookstore yesterday, one of the two remaining bookshops in town actually, talking to the new owner and we know each other by sight (at least I do) and we had just such a conversation; I used to have a friend in ‘another life, in another town’ with whom I had talks like these, I’ve just remembered how I enjoyed these talks with him-of-the-other-life. How much I enjoyed yesterday’s talk in fact. Here and Now.

This tree conversation has captured my thoughts because it is as you say Saskia. You can "branch out" all over when talking with someone yet if that someone is a person you connect with, it doesn't matter how deep you go or where you go with your conversation or even how silly you get, it is understood, your words, their words, because what wraps around what you say and holds is your connection.

AND your tree bark and moss bracelet; you are set to welcome the Winter Solstice bedecked like that and I love the image. I can see many women, bedecked with tree bracelets, moss in their hair dancing around a venerable old tree and it is a grand image.

This is wonderful and so filled with truth. I remember how one of my closest friends and I did this years back. We would interrupt each other and finish each other's sentence's. Used to totally tick off my ex, he thought we were being direspectful to each other (mostly me of course)...but he just didn't get. We did.
Beautiful tree cuff. Check out this site: http://www.treesisters.org/
If you are on FB and 'like' their page you can see the amazing quotes and tree artwork they post there. BTW Much more peaceful than the bright colors of their website :)
Thanks for this post Saskia!

I absolutely LOVE the bark bracelet! I made a mask like this once... and it supposedly keeps living - well, the lichen - cause its living off the bark.

And, speaking of conversations... I just HAD to share this:

Mo and Dee, I notice bits of bark lots of the time, only now did I think to wear it like this; not a very practical item and very fragile, alas, but very nice in a photo; who knows what could evolve from this idea....
ha Nancy, snap! those conversations are just great and it isn't 'interrupting', it's the way it goes: bouncing back and forth; thanks for the link btw
Valerianna, thank you for the cats conversing, very funny!
Julie, I think I stay with my husband for this same reason; our conversation has been ongoing for the past 22 years! I think I stay with my husband for this same reason; our conversation has been ongoing for the past 22 years!
